Photography 🢒 Syria and Jordan 1993

The entrance to the National Museum in Aleppo. While unspectacular, it is noteworthy for the figures and what they represent: Syria is both far more ancient and diverse than many of us tend to think.
The statues are Iron Age, of Neo-Hittite origin and roughly three thousand years old. When their builders ruled the area, Aleppo was already an ancient city, people having occupied the site for thousands of years before.
As well as the no doubt countless earlier rivals lost to history, at various times since Aleppo has been controlled by the Persians, Greeks, Armenians, Romans and Byzantines, Arabs, crusaders and Turks. All left their mark on it and nearby areas.
